7 Days to Die Server Hosting FAQ

How many players can join a 7 Days to Die server?

7 Days to Die dedicated servers support up to 64 players. We recommend 16 for the best performance with large groups. The exact player count depends on your plan and server resources. For the best performance with large groups, we recommend allocating more RAM and keeping the world size reasonable.

Does 7 Days to Die support crossplay?

Yes. Steam PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Epic Games Store players can share one server. It is opt-in: turn on Enable Crossplay in the Settings tab and restart. The game imposes four rules while it is on, and your server will refuse to start if any is broken - Easy Anti-Cheat must stay enabled, the player cap must be 8 or fewer, an RWG world must be 8192 or smaller, and no mods. That last one is the real trade-off: mods need EAC off, so a modded server is Steam-only by nature. Crossplay is off by default so that servers with more than 8 slots are not silently capped.

Can I install mods on my 7 Days to Die server?

Yes. Server-side mods go in the Mods/ folder at the root of the server install, and the Mods tab installs them for you from Nexus Mods. We fully support popular overhaul mods including Darkness Falls, War3zuk, Undead Legacy, and Sorcery. Big overhauls usually require a fresh world - generate a new save after installing them. Two things to know: most modded servers need EAC turned off first, because mods that ship a DLL trip it, and mods and crossplay are mutually exclusive - a modded server is Steam PC only.

What is RWG and how do I generate a custom world?

RWG (Random World Generation) is 7 Days to Die procedural world generation. You can configure world size, biome distribution, and generation seed in serverconfig.xml. GameGrid lets you set these from the Settings tab. For worlds larger than 8K, we recommend generating locally and uploading via the File Manager for faster setup.

What ports does a 7 Days to Die server use?

GameGrid assigns every server a block of ports from the 28000-39000 range. Your 7 Days to Die server gets a base port from that block, and everything else it needs is derived from that base. The default port 26900 is what the game uses when you run it yourself at home — it is NOT your port on GameGrid. Players connect using the full Server Address shown on your dashboard (IP:port), not 26900. All port configuration is handled automatically.

How do I become an admin on my 7 Days to Die server?

Add your Steam ID or player name to the admin list in serverconfig.xml (WebDashboardResultEnabled and AdminList settings). You can also use the GameGrid Console tab to run admin commands directly. Telnet access is available from the control panel for remote administration.

How do I configure zombie horde settings?

All zombie and horde settings are in serverconfig.xml, editable from the GameGrid Settings tab. You can adjust Blood Moon frequency, zombie spawn counts, zombie block damage, player block damage, enemy aggression, and whether Blood Moon always falls on a specific day. You can also disable Blood Moon entirely if you prefer a building-focused server.

What is EAC and should I enable it?

EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) is 7 Days to Die built-in anti-cheat system, and it defaults to on. If EAC is enabled on the server, all connecting clients must also have EAC enabled. For modded servers, turn it off: most mods that ship a DLL trip it. The server and all clients must agree - mixing EAC on and off causes connection errors. Turning EAC off also gives up crossplay, because the game requires it: your console players will no longer be able to join. Decide which one your community wants before you wipe.

Can I upload my existing 7 Days to Die world?

Yes. Stop your server, upload your world folder to the Saves/ directory using the File Manager, and update the GameWorld setting in serverconfig.xml to point to your world. Restart the server and your world will load. Our knowledge base has a detailed migration guide.

How do I reset or wipe my 7 Days to Die server?

To wipe your server, stop it from the control panel, delete the save folder contents using the File Manager, and restart. A fresh RWG world will be generated on boot based on your world generation settings. Always create a backup before wiping in case you want to restore.

Why does my server take a long time to start?

A fresh RWG world on 8192 or 10240 can take 10 to 20 minutes to generate before accepting connections. This is normal for 7 Days to Die. Larger world sizes take longer. You can reduce startup time by using a smaller world size or uploading a pre-generated world. Check the Console tab for the GameServer.LogOn successful message to know when the server is ready.

Can I adjust the day and night cycle length?

Yes. The DayLightLength and NightLightLength settings in serverconfig.xml control how long each part of the day lasts in real-world minutes. You can make days longer for building and exploration, or shorten nights to reduce zombie encounters. All settings are editable from the GameGrid Settings tab.

How do I reduce lag during Blood Moon?

Blood Moon (horde night) can cause lag spikes due to the large number of zombies spawning simultaneously. To reduce lag, lower the zombie spawn count in serverconfig.xml, reduce the world size, use a plan with more RAM, and keep the server vanilla during horde nights. Pre-generating the world also helps since chunk generation during gameplay is a major source of lag.

What happens when 7 Days to Die releases an update?

When The Fun Pimps release a game update, your server needs to be updated to match. GameGrid handles this through SteamCMD. You will receive a notification when an update is available. Always back up your world before updating. If you are running mods, wait until the mods are updated for the new version before upgrading your server.

Can I set a server password?

Yes. Set ServerPassword in serverconfig.xml to require a password for players to join. Leave it empty for a public server. You can also set ServerVisibility to control whether your server appears in the public server list (2 for public, 0 for hidden/direct-connect only). Both settings are configurable from the GameGrid Settings tab.
