Minecraft (Vanilla)

GameGrid supports all five Minecraft server types: Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge. You choose the type when you create the server. Each type is a separate server, so to move to a different type you create a new server of that type and copy your world across with the File Manager. Paper is the most popular choice for plugin-based servers, while Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge are used for modded servers.

Paper is a high-performance server fork that supports Bukkit and Spigot plugins without changing vanilla gameplay. Forge is a mod loader for large content modpacks like FTB and All The Mods. Fabric is a lightweight mod loader that updates quickly and is popular for performance mods like Lithium and FerriteCore. NeoForge is a newer fork of Forge that split off in late 2023, starting with Minecraft 1.20.2, and is now the standard for modern modded servers, while legacy Forge is still used for older versions.

Yes. If you are running Paper or Spigot, you can install Bukkit and Spigot plugins. Common plugins include LuckPerms for permissions, EssentialsX for general utilities, and WorldEdit for world management. Vanilla has no plugin or mod support. Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge support mods, not plugins.

Use the Mod Manager tab in the GameGrid control panel. Browse mods from CurseForge and install them with one click. For manual installation, upload mod JAR files to the mods/ folder using the File Manager. Mods are supported on Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge servers; Paper supports plugins instead. Vanilla has no mod or plugin support. Mods that add client-side content or require client/server synchronization must also be installed by players on their own clients. Server-side-only mods generally do not require client installation.

Minecraft servers on GameGrid can handle 100+ players depending on your plan and server configuration. Paper servers with optimized settings handle higher player counts better than Vanilla. For large servers, we recommend Paper with pre-generated chunks (using Chunky) and optimized view distances.

Open the Settings tab in the control panel and enable the whitelist. Then add players by their Minecraft username or UUID from the Player Management tab. Only whitelisted players will be able to join. You can also use the in-game command /whitelist add playername if you are an operator.

Yes. Stop your server, upload your world folder to the server directory using the File Manager, and update the level-name setting in server.properties to match your world folder name. Restart the server and your world will load. Our knowledge base has a detailed guide with screenshots.

Open the Console tab in the control panel and type op yourusername, then press Enter. You can also add operators from the Player Management tab. Once you are an OP, you can use all in-game commands like /gamemode, /give, /tp, and /time.

All server.properties settings are editable from the Settings tab in the control panel. You can change difficulty, game mode, PvP, max players, view distance, level seed, and more through a visual form. Changes take effect after the next server restart.

Yes. GameGrid allows you to set custom JVM arguments for your Minecraft server, including memory allocation, garbage collector settings, and performance flags. This is useful for large modpacks that need specific JVM tuning. Configure JVM arguments from the Settings tab.

When Mojang releases a new Minecraft version, you can update your server from the control panel. For modded servers (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge), wait until your mods are updated for the new version before upgrading. Always create a backup before updating. Vanilla and Paper servers can typically update immediately.

Each server type (Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge) is a separate server rather than a setting you toggle, so there is no in-place variant swap. To move to a different type, create a new server of that type and copy your world folder across using the File Manager, or download a backup and restore it into the new server. Create a backup first. Note that a modded world (Forge, NeoForge, Fabric) is not compatible with Vanilla or Paper - modded items, blocks, and configurations will not load there, so review your mods before moving.

Use Paper instead of Vanilla for better performance. Pre-generate chunks with the Chunky plugin to prevent lag spikes during exploration. Reduce view distance and simulation distance in server.properties. Install performance mods like Lithium, FerriteCore, and Starlight (for Fabric) or use Paper built-in optimizations. Yes. GameGrid supports major Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge modpacks, subject to version and resource compatibility. For Forge-based packs like RLCraft and SkyFactory, select Forge as your server type and upload the modpack files. For Fabric-based packs, select Fabric. Large modpacks may require more RAM, so choose a plan that matches the pack requirements. You can upgrade your plan at any time.

GameGrid hosts Java Edition servers. Bedrock players (consoles, mobile, Windows 10) can join a Java server by installing the GeyserMC plugin on a Paper server. This is a community-maintained plugin that translates between Java and Bedrock protocols. Setup is manual - our knowledge base has a guide to help you configure it.
