Switching Games and Keeping Your World

Change the game in a plan slot without losing the old world: save it to your Vault, delete the server, create the new game's server in the freed slot, and load the save back whenever you return to that game, within 12 months.

How switching works

A slot on your plan runs one game server at a time, and it can run any game in your plan's group at the same price. There is no button that turns one game's server into another's. You switch by deleting the server in the slot and creating the new game's server in the slot that frees up. Your plan, its billing and its slot count do not change. What a plan group is and what deleting a server removes are in Swap Games.

Deleting a server deletes its world, and its backups go with it. Your Vault is how you keep the world: a Vault save belongs to your account, not to the server, so it stays after the server is deleted. It is kept for 12 months from the day it was saved, and you can load it onto a new server of the same game whenever you come back to it.

Switch to another game and keep your world

1. On My Servers, press Delete on the server's card. The panel asks "Do you want to move the save into your Vault?"

2. Press Save to Vault, then delete. GameGrid takes a fresh backup of the server, copies it into your Vault as "Before deleting <server name>" and checks the copy. Keep the page open until it says Deleted: the server is deleted only once the save is safely in your Vault, and that frees its slot.

3. The plan card now shows + Add Server. Press it, choose the new game under Game, give the server a name and press Add Server.

4. The new server is installed and stays stopped until you press Start. It has its own address, so give your players the new one from its Overview page.

You can also save first and delete afterwards: Save to Vault on the server's Overview page (the Vault card) or on its Backups page, then Delete without saving when the panel asks, since the save is already in your Vault. Saving a Server to Your Vault has every way to save and what can stop one.

Go back to the old game later

1. If you want to keep the world you have now as well, save it the same way when you delete that server. Then delete it to free the slot (or use a free slot, if your plan has one).

2. Press + Add Server on the plan card and choose the old game. Start from a Vault save appears with your saves of that game: pick the one you want instead of Start with a new world, name the server and press Add Server.

3. The server is installed as usual, then the save is loaded before its first start: the world, its settings and its setup. The server's Vault card shows the load until it is done. The new server keeps its own name, passwords and address, so give your players the address again.

Already created the server with a new world? Press Load from Vault on its Vault card; the server has to be stopped, and the dialog offers Stop server. GameGrid takes a safety backup of the server first, so you can undo the load. See Loading a Vault Save onto a Server.

Things to know

  • Same game only. A save loads only onto a server of exactly the same game, never onto another game's server. The Vault keeps a world for when you return to its game; it does not move a world between games.
  • Who can do it. Only the account owner can delete a server, so only the owner is asked about the Vault when deleting. The account owner and administrators can save to the Vault and start or load a server from a save.
  • The save is kept for 12 months from the day it was saved, and loading it does not extend that. We email you before a save expires. To keep a world longer, download the save from your Vault, or load it onto a server and save it again. Space and expiry are in Vault Space, Limits and Expiry.
  • Your Vault has 10 GB. If a save does not fit, the panel says how much it needs and how much is free, and nothing is deleted until you choose: delete older saves from your Vault first, or delete without saving.
  • A server that has never been started has nothing to save. The panel then offers only Delete and Cancel.
  • Switch while your plan is active. A deactivated server cannot be saved to the Vault. Saves already in your Vault stay when a plan ends, and you can load one again once you have an active plan.
