Transfer an Enshrouded World to Your Server
Transfer a single-player or co-op Enshrouded world to your server, or between servers: where the save files are, how to rename them, and what characters keep.
Check with support first
Check with support before you upload a world. In October 2026 Enshrouded changed how the dedicated server stores its world: on the current game version the server keeps it in
world0.ksdwith backup copies, not in the3ad85aeafiles these steps use. The steps below have not been re-checked against that change, so contact support before you upload a world to your server.
The world moves. Characters do not need to.
This is the part that surprises people, and it is good news.
In Enshrouded, your character lives on your own PC: level, skills, inventory, map exploration. The world lives on the server: buildings, chests, terrain, quest progress.
So:
- Moving a world brings everything you built.
- Your players keep their characters automatically, on any server they join. There is nothing to transfer for them.
- Nobody loses their level by moving to your server.
That also means you cannot "transfer a character" to a server, and you do not need to.
How a world looks on disk
A world is a small set of files with a short hexadecimal name, not the world's title:
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
<id> | The base copy of the world |
<id>-1, <id>-2, โฆ | Rolling copies, the newer saves |
<id>-index | A small text file that says which copy is the newest |
On your GameGrid server the world is in the savegame folder, and on an older game version the dedicated server uses the id `3ad85aea`: 3ad85aea, 3ad85aea-1 and so on, and 3ad85aea-index. The current version keeps its world in world0.ksd instead (see the note at the top).
On your PC, Enshrouded keeps worlds in your Saved Games\Enshrouded folder (%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Enshrouded), or, with Steam Cloud on, in Steam's userdata\<your Steam account number>\1203620\remote folder. If you have several worlds there, sort by date modified and take the set you were last playing: all the files that share one id.
Take a backup first
Before you touch anything, take a manual backup of the server you are moving the world to. If its current world matters to anybody, this is what stands between you and losing it.
Backups โ Create Backup Now. See Enshrouded Saves, Backups and Restore.
Moving a world onto your server
1. Stop the server and wait for it to show as stopped. Never swap save files on a running server: Enshrouded writes its world on a clean stop, and it would overwrite what you upload.
2. Take a backup, as above.
3. On your PC, copy the world's files (the base file, every -N copy and the -index file) into a new folder, so you are working on copies.
4. Rename the copies to the server's id, keeping everything after the id exactly as it is. For a world whose id is a1b2c3d4:
a1b2c3d4becomes3ad85aeaa1b2c3d4-3becomes3ad85aea-3a1b2c3d4-indexbecomes3ad85aea-index
Do not edit the index file's contents.
5. Connect over FTP or SFTP with the details on the File Access (FTP/SFTP) card of your server's Overview, and open savegame. (The panel's Files page takes uploads of up to 1.4 MB a file, and a well-built world's files can be bigger.)
6. Move the server's existing files out of the way: download them if you want a second copy, then delete them, so no old copy is left beside yours.
7. Upload your renamed files into savegame, in binary mode.
8. Start the server and join.
To check it loaded your world, join it and look for your buildings: the current game version no longer logs how many bases it loaded (an older version wrote [savexxx] LOAD <n> bases <n> entities in the Console). If you get a fresh, empty world instead, the file names are the first thing to check, and the second is that the server was fully stopped before you uploaded.
Moving between two GameGrid servers
The same shape, and simpler, because both sides already use the id 3ad85aea:
1. Stop both servers.
2. Download the savegame contents from the source server.
3. Back up the destination, then clear its savegame.
4. Upload the files unchanged.
5. Start the destination.
What comes with the world
| Comes with it | Does not |
|---|---|
| Everything built, including Flame Altars | Player characters, which are on each player's PC |
| Chest contents | Your server's settings |
| Terraforming | Your user groups and passwords |
| Quest progress in the world | Your economy balances, which live on GameGrid |
So after a transfer, check your Settings page: a world from somebody else's server does not bring its difficulty values with it.
If you are not sure
A world you built over months is worth more than the twenty minutes it takes to ask. Open a support ticket and we will do the move with you rather than you guessing at file names.
Rolling back instead
If what you actually want is "put yesterday back", that is a restore, not a transfer: Enshrouded Saves, Backups and Restore.
