Valheim Progression Guide: Biomes, Bosses, and Gear
The complete Valheim progression path from Meadows to Ashlands. Boss order, biome unlocks, key gear, and Forsaken Powers.
How Progression Works
Valheim is gated by biomes and bosses. Each biome unlocks the metal and gear you need to survive the next, and each boss drops a trophy and grants a Forsaken Power you can swap based on what is ahead.
The core loop is: enter a new biome, gather its signature resource, craft the next tier of gear, find and defeat that biome's boss, and use what you unlocked to survive the next, tougher biome.
You can explore biomes out of order, but you will be severely under-geared. Follow the order below for a smooth experience.
There is no need to rush. Many players spend 40-50 hours between bosses, exploring and building. Savor the journey.
1. Meadows - Eikthyr
The starting biome. Safe, green, and gentle. You wash up here with nothing.
Gather Wood and Stone. Craft a Stone Axe and Hammer. Build a Workbench with a roof (crafting requires cover).
Build a shelter with a Campfire (keep it ventilated so smoke escapes) and a Bed. Activate the Rested bonus by sleeping.
Craft a Crude Bow and arrows. Hunt deer for Deer Trophies.
Find the Eikthyr Vegvisir (runestone) to locate the summoning altar. Place 2 Deer Trophies on the altar to summon Eikthyr.
Defeat Eikthyr to get Hard Antlers. Craft an Antler Pickaxe - this unlocks mining.
Forsaken Power (Eikthyr): reduces running and jumping stamina use by 60%. Great for exploration and grinding.
2. Black Forest - The Elder
The second biome. Dense pine forest with Copper and Tin deposits.
Use the Antler Pickaxe to mine Copper deposits (large green rocks) and Tin (small shiny rocks near water).
Build a Smelter and Forge. Smelt Copper and Tin into Bronze (2 Copper + 1 Tin).
Craft Bronze weapons, tools, and Troll-hide or Bronze armor.
Find The Elder Vegvisir. Summon with 3 Ancient Seeds (found in Greydwarf nests).
The Elder is a large tree-like boss. It shoots projectiles and summons roots. Use fire arrows and keep moving.
Forsaken Power (The Elder): faster tree-chopping. Useful for building projects.
Key unlock: the Swamp Key (dropped by The Elder) opens crypts in the Swamp biome.
3. Swamp - Bonemass
Dark, wet, and dangerous. Sunken Crypts contain Scrap Iron.
Use the Swamp Key to open crypts. Mine Scrap Iron piles inside. Watch out for Draugr and Blobs.
Build a Kiln and upgrade your Smelter. Smelt Scrap Iron into Iron.
Craft Iron weapons (mace is best for Bonemass), Iron armor, or Root armor (for archers).
Find Bonemass Vegvisir. Summon with Withered Bones (found in crypts).
Bonemass is a blob boss weak to blunt damage. Use a mace. It summons adds and poisons. Bring poison resistance mead.
Forsaken Power (Bonemass): resistance to blunt, slash, and pierce damage. Excellent for tough fights.
Key unlock: Wishbone (dropped by Bonemass) detects buried treasure and Silver veins in the Mountains.
4. Mountains - Moder
Frozen peaks. You need Frost Resistance mead or Wolf/Fenris armor to survive the cold.
Use the Wishbone to find Silver veins buried in the mountains. Mine Silver.
Craft Silver weapons (Frostner is excellent, Draugr Fang bow for archers) and Wolf armor.
Find Moder Vegvisir. Summon with 3 Dragon Eggs (found on mountain peaks).
Moder is a dragon that alternates between flying and grounded phases. Use a silver sword and fire arrows. Avoid her breath attack.
Forsaken Power (Moder): tailwind for sailing. Always-on wind boost. Essential for ocean travel.
Key unlock: Moder drops Dragon Tears, needed to craft the Artisan Table for Plains-tier crafting.
5. Plains - Yagluth
Open grasslands with Fuling villages. Dangerous but rewarding.
Mine Black Metal scraps from Fulings. Build a Blast Furnace and Spinning Wheel.
Craft Black Metal weapons and Padded armor (the best non-magic armor in the game).
Find Yagluth Vegvisir. Summon with 5 Fuling Totems (found in Fuling villages or dropped by Fulings).
Yagluth is a skeletal boss with fire attacks. Bring fire resistance mead and dodge his beam attack.
Forsaken Power (Yagluth): resistance to elemental damage (fire, frost, poison). Great for Mistlands and Ashlands.
6. Mistlands - The Queen
Dark, foggy, and vertical. Bring a Wisplight (crafted from Torn Spirits and a Wisp) to see through the mist.
Mine Black Cores and Soft Tissue. Unlock Eitr (magic) for the first time.
Craft Carapace gear (melee) or Eitr-weave robes (magic). Magic users craft staffs and wands.
Find Sealbreaker Fragments to craft the Sealbreaker. Use it to open The Queen's lair.
The Queen is an insectoid boss that burrows and summons adds. Bring a mix of melee and magic. Her attacks are fast.
Forsaken Power (The Queen): boosted Eitr regeneration. Essential for magic users.
Key unlock: the Mistlands sets up Ashlands progression. Ensure your gear is fully upgraded before proceeding.
7. Ashlands - Fader
A lava-soaked warzone filled with Charred undead. The hardest biome in the current game.
Bring Fire Resistance mead (or Bonemass-line resistances) before setting foot on the lava.
Mine Flametal. Craft Flametal weapons and armor - the best gear tier in the game.
Bring your best food. Three high-tier foods (max HP + stamina) matter more than gear in the Ashlands.
Find the three Bells and ring them on the altar to summon Fader.
Fader is the final current boss. A massive fire entity with devastating attacks. Bring your best gear, best food, fire resistance, and a full party if possible.
Forsaken Power (Fader): boosted carry weight. Useful for hauling Flametal and Ashlands materials.
8. Deep North (Coming with 1.0)
The Deep North is announced as the final biome and is not in the game at the time of writing. Iron Gate is the only source for what it will contain and when it arrives - check their own channels rather than this article for a date.
Nothing in it is configurable from your server panel today, and no GameGrid setting turns it on.
Tips for Server Groups
Swap Forsaken Powers for the task: Eikthyr for running/grinding, Moder for sailing, Bonemass or Yagluth for tough fights.
Do not skip biomes. Each metal needs the previous one's tools (e.g. you need a Bronze pickaxe to mine Iron in the Swamp).
Best food matters more than gear in later biomes. Three high-tier foods (max HP + stamina) carry the Plains, Mistlands, and Ashlands.
Always bring poison resistance mead to the Swamp and fire resistance mead to the Ashlands.
On a dedicated server, your world is persistent. You can log off mid-expedition and resume exactly where you left off.
Share metal transport duties: portals cannot carry metals (unless portal rules are set to Casual). Use a Karve or Longship to haul ore back to base.
