Land Claim Blocks and Base Protection

How land claim blocks work, every land claim setting in the panel with its real default and range, and how to balance protection against raiding.

How Land Claims Work

A land claim block is a craftable item that protects a cubic area around it. Other players cannot place or break blocks inside that area, and the protected blocks are harder to destroy.

The claim owner builds normally inside their own claim. Friends of the owner are treated differently from strangers - the dead zone between claims, for instance, does not apply between friends.

Land claims are what stops griefing on a PvE server. On a PvP server they are the dial between "bases hold" and "everything is raidable".

All the land claim settings below live in Settings under the Land Claim category. None of them are marked restart-required, which means saving one does not restart your server for you - the value is written to the config file and the game reads it at startup, so restart once you have finished changing them.

Configuration Options

Land Claim Count (default 5, range 0-100) - the maximum number of claims one player may own. Set it to 0 to disable land claims entirely. This is the setting for a no-claims server.

Land Claim Size (default 41, range 1-1000) - the edge length in blocks of the protected area around a claim block. 41 means a 41-block cube centred on the block. The minimum is 1, not 0, so this is not the way to switch claims off.

Land Claim Dead Zone (default 30, range 0-200) - the minimum gap in blocks between two claim blocks. Stops strangers boxing each other in. Does not apply between friends.

Land Claim Expiry Time (default 7, range 1-365) - days a player can be offline before their claim block stops protecting.

Land Claim Decay Mode (default 0) - how protection falls away while the owner is offline. 0 = Default, 1 = Linear, 2 = Exponential.

Land Claim Online Durability Modifier (default 4, range 0-100) - how much the protected area's hardness is increased while the owner is online. Higher means harder to break in.

Land Claim Offline Durability Modifier (default 4, range 0-100) - the same while the owner is offline. Lower this to make offline raiding realistic; raise it to protect players who cannot be online all day.

Land Claim Offline Delay (default 0, range 0-60) - minutes after the owner logs out before the area switches from online hardness to offline hardness. Raise it so combat-logging does not instantly weaken a base.

Balancing Protection vs Raiding

PvE server: leave the defaults, and raise Land Claim Expiry Time (say 30) so a player who takes a fortnight off does not come back to a ruin. Raise Land Claim Offline Durability Modifier if griefing is a problem.

Casual PvP: defaults. Bases are meaningfully protected online and offline.

Offline-raid PvP: drop Land Claim Offline Durability Modifier to 1 and set Land Claim Offline Delay to 5-10 minutes.

Full-raid PvP: Land Claim Count 0. No claims exist and every base is raidable at any time.

Busy server, lots of bases: raise Land Claim Dead Zone so claims cannot be packed against each other, and consider lowering Land Claim Count to 2 or 3 so one player cannot fence off a district.

All of these are whole numbers. The fields are integers - a value like 0.5 will not be accepted.

Common Issues

"I cannot place blocks near another player's base" - you are inside their claim. Move outside it, or ask them to move their claim block.

"I cannot place my claim block here" - you are within another player's Land Claim Dead Zone. Move further away, or become friends with the owner, for whom the dead zone does not apply.

"My land claim disappeared" - the owner was offline longer than Land Claim Expiry Time. Raise that setting if it is catching your players out.

"Players are griefing my base" - place a land claim block. Without one, nothing protects your build.

"I have run out of claims" - Land Claim Count is the per-player cap. Raise it in Settings if your community builds more than five bases each.

"I changed a setting and nothing happened" - land claim settings are read when the game starts. Save them, then restart the server from the button at the top of the page.
