DayZ Admin Tool Mods: Community Online Tools and VPP

What DayZ admin tool mods such as Community Online Tools and VPP Admin Tools add, how they are installed as Steam Workshop mods, and what the Console tab does without them.

Why Admin Tools Are Mods

Vanilla DayZ admin can kick, ban, message and shut down, and nothing else. Teleporting, spawning items, healing, spectating, changing weather or seeing players on a map are not in the base game at all.

GameGrid covers part of that from the panel, with no mod for you or your players to install: the DayZ Tools page can message, heal, teleport or kick a player who is in game and spawn an object beside them, and the Live Map page shows player and vehicle positions on a map grid. Both come from GameGrid's own server-side mod, and the Economy page is how an item reaches a player's own hands, through the shop or a kit.

An admin tool mod is still the way to get a menu your admins open inside the game while they play, along with spectating, a free camera and weather control. The two most used are free on the Steam Workshop:

Installing an Admin Tool Mod

Admin tool mods are Steam Workshop mods, installed from your server's Mods tab like any other mod. Mods on Your DayZ Server covers installing, load order and keys.

  • Install everything the tool depends on and keep it above the tool in the list. COT needs @CF first.
  • Admin tools are Client & server mods, so your players load them too.
  • Each tool has its own permission and configuration files, which it keeps in profiles/. Set them up from the tool's own Workshop page or documentation, and take a manual backup on the Backups tab before changing them.

What the Console Tab Does Without a Mod

The Console tab sends BattlEye RCon commands to your server from the browser:

  • players to see who is online, with their player numbers;
  • say -1 <message> to message everyone;
  • kick and ban with a player number, and addBan with a BattlEye GUID.

See BattlEye RCon and the Console Tab and Banning Players and BattlEye Bans.

How Admin Tool Mods Work on DayZ

Before you pick one:

  • Both COT and VPP are client and server mods: every player must have the same version loaded, or they cannot join.
  • Only admins get the menus. Regular players have the mod loaded but no permissions, so nothing changes for them.
  • Admins are identified by Steam64 ID in the mod's own permission files under profiles/, not by DayZ player ID or BattlEye GUID.
  • Pick one. Running both doubles the load on server and clients, and they can conflict.

Keeping Admin Tools Secure

  • Few super-admins. Give full permissions only to people you trust with your whole server. Both mods let you create lesser roles, for example spectate and teleport but not item spawning.
  • Actions are logged. Both mods write what admins do into their own logs under profiles/. Check them when something looks off.
  • Remove admins who leave from the permission files.
