DayZ BattlEye RCon and the Console Tab
Use the Console tab to send BattlEye RCon commands to your DayZ server: list players, message everyone, kick, ban and shut down, and schedule messages with the Command Manager.
What BattlEye RCon Is
DayZ's server has no command window of its own. Remote administration goes through BattlEye RCon, the remote console built into BattlEye, the anti-cheat every DayZ server runs.
On GameGrid, RCon is set up for you: the platform writes the RCon port and a generated password before each start, and RCon only listens inside the host. You reach it through:
- the Console tab in the panel;
- the Command Manager, for scheduled commands.
The GameGrid Discord bot and the Customer API do not send RCon commands to a DayZ server.
Type commands in the box at the bottom of the Console tab, without a leading slash.
The Commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
players | Lists connected players with their number, ping and BattlEye GUID |
say -1 <message> | Sends a message to every player |
say <#> <message> | Sends a message to one player, by number |
kick <#> [reason] | Kicks a player. They can rejoin |
ban <#> [minutes] [reason] | Bans a connected player. Minutes 0 or none is permanent |
addBan <GUID> [minutes] [reason] | Bans a player who is not online, by BattlEye GUID |
bans | Lists BattlEye bans with their ban numbers |
removeBan <ban#> | Removes a ban by its number from bans |
writeBans | Saves the ban list to disk |
loadBans | Reloads the ban list from disk after editing the file |
#shutdown | Shuts the server down cleanly, saving the world |
These are BattlEye's standard RCon commands. GameGrid uses #shutdown itself to stop DayZ cleanly. For the other commands, read the reply the Console shows after each one, and check in game that a message or kick really happened.
Player numbers come from players and only last for that player's session. Always run players first and use the number next to the right name.
RCon has no command to teleport, heal, spawn items or read positions. Those need an admin tool mod, installed from your server's Mods tab like any other Workshop mod — or GameGrid's own DayZ Tools page, which does all four with nothing for your players to install. See Admin Tool Mods.
Reading the players Output
A players reply has one line per player: their number, network address, ping, BattlEye GUID (a 32-character code) and name. A GUID followed by (OK) has been verified by BattlEye.
- The number is what
kick, banandsaytake. - The GUID is what
addBantakes, and stays the same between sessions. - IP addresses are masked. GameGrid masks player IP addresses in the RCon replies shown in the Console, so you do not see them. Your players' addresses are personal data, and you do not need them to moderate: use the number or the GUID.
A GUID is not a Steam ID. See Steam64, DayZ Player ID and BattlEye GUID for which ID goes where.
Examples
players
say -1 Server restart in 15 minutes. Find somewhere safe.
kick 4 Please rename, offensive name
ban 7 10080 Duping, appeal on our Discord
bans
removeBan 2
writeBansBan length is in minutes: 60 is an hour, 1440 a day, 10080 a week.
#shutdown Is Not the Stop Button
#shutdown makes DayZ save and exit. When you send it from the Console, the platform did not ask for that exit, so it treats it as unexpected and starts the server again.
- To take the server offline and keep it off, use Stop in the status bar. Stop also sends
#shutdown, so the world is saved the same way. - To restart, use Restart in the status bar.
Scheduling Messages with the Command Manager
The Command Manager, on your server's Event Manager page, sends console commands on a schedule. On DayZ those are BattlEye RCon commands.
- The Restart warning sequence template sends warning messages over BattlEye RCon (
say -1) before a restart time you choose. It does not stop, restart or lock the server itself: pair it with your restart schedule. - The Rotating tips template sends one message every two hours while players are online.
Use Run Now and then Log on a new schedule to see what the server replied, and check in game that the message arrived. How schedules work in general is in the Command Manager Guide, and restart planning for DayZ is in Scheduled Restarts and Server Messages.
External RCon Tools
Desktop and phone RCon tools such as DaRT, or services that connect over the internet, cannot connect to a GameGrid DayZ server: RCon only listens inside the host and its port is not open to the internet. That is a deliberate security choice. BattlEye RCon sends its password unencrypted and allows kicks, bans and shutdown, so an exposed RCon port invites someone else to take over the server.
Use the Console tab and the Command Manager instead.
When the Console Does Not Answer
- The server is starting. BattlEye only accepts RCon once the server has loaded, which on DayZ takes a while. Wait for Online in the status bar.
- The server is stopped or crashed. Check the status bar, then the newest
.RPTlog inprofiles/. - Right after a restart. RCon starts fresh on every boot; send the command again once the server is Online.
If the console stays unreachable while the server is Online and players can join, open a support ticket and include the time you tried.
