Bigger Stacks, Backpacks and Chests on Enshrouded

Raise stack sizes, add backpack slots and make storage chests bigger on your Enshrouded server, with no mod for players to install, and the catches to know.

The three settings

On your Settings page there is an Inventory & Storage section, after the gameplay values:

SettingChoicesWhat it changes
Maximum stack sizeGame default, 2x, 3x, 5x, 10xHow much of a stacking item fits in one slot
More backpack slotsGame default, +8 slots (one row), +16 slots (two rows)How many slots a backpack has
More storage slotsGame default, 1.5x, 2xHow many slots a player-built storage chest has

These settings are server-side, so your players install nothing for them. GameGrid applies them to your server's own copy of the game data before each start, and a player's unmodded game sees the result.

To change them:

1. Open Settings and scroll to Inventory & Storage.

2. Pick the values you want.

3. Press Save Changes. All three need a restart; on a running server GameGrid restarts it for you, and on a stopped one they apply at the next start.

After the restart the Console shows a line such as [GameGrid] Server settings applied to the game data: stackSizeMultiplier 5, ..., so you can see they took effect.

What each one actually does

Maximum stack size multiplies the stack of every item that already stacks, up to 65,000 in a slot. Items that are one per slot (weapons, armour, tools, backpacks) stay at one, because the game has no way to stack them. At 5x, stone that stacks to 1,000 stacks to 5,000, and an item that stacks to 250 stacks to 1,250.

More backpack slots adds whole rows of eight to every backpack, up to 40 slots per backpack. The game's backpacks run from 8 to 32 slots depending on tier, so with +8 the largest has 40, and +16 lifts every smaller one by two rows while the largest stops at 40. The inventory a player has without a backpack does not change.

More storage slots multiplies the slots of the storage chests players build and rounds up to a full row of eight, so you never get a half row, up to 80 slots per chest. The game's own chests run from 16 to 72 slots by tier; at 2x the smallest has 32.

Nothing else changes: the player's own inventory, loot chests out in the world, crafting stations, cupboards and tombstones keep the sizes the game gave them.

All three were watched in game on an unmodded client: a full stack of stone at 5x, a new chest at 2x with 32 slots, and a new large backpack at +8 with 40. They survived a death and a relog.

The three catches

These are not faults: they follow from where the game stores each number. They cause most of the "it didn't work" reports.

Stacks already in an inventory keep their count

A stack of 250 stone sitting in a chest stays at 250 until something is added to it. It is not topped up. Add more stone and it fills to the new size.

A backpack keeps the size it was made with

The slot count is part of the backpack itself, saved with the player's character. A backpack a player already owns does not grow.

Players need to make a new backpack to get the extra rows. Tell them that when you turn the setting on, or you will get reports that nothing happened.

One more oddity: the backpack's description in game may still show the game's usual number, because that text comes from the player's own game. The real slot count is what they see when they open it.

A chest keeps the size it was placed with

Same reason. A chest already standing keeps its slots until it is picked up and placed again.

It works the other way too: a chest placed while the setting is on keeps its extra slots even if you switch the setting back to Game default. The size went into the placed chest. If you are trying 2x storage out, know that you cannot cleanly take it back.

What to tell your players

A short message saves a lot of questions:

Stacks are now 5x. Existing stacks fill up as you add to them. Backpacks and chests only get the extra space when you make a new one, so craft a fresh backpack and re-place your chests if you want the bigger version.

How this affects the economy

Raising stack size changes three things on the Economy page:

  • The shop's Stack column shows the new number with the sum, for example "1,250 (250 ร— 5)". Saved but not yet applied, it shows "250 โ†’ 1,250 after restart". No rescan is needed.
  • Deliveries get faster. Items are handed over as full stacks plus singles, so a bigger stack means fewer requests for the same amount. See How Items Are Delivered on Enshrouded.
  • Kit lines change meaning. A kit line is a quantity, so a line that was one full stack is now less than a stack. Re-check your kits after a change. See Kits on Enshrouded.

These are not your mods

You may have seen community mods that do similar things. These settings are GameGrid's own: GameGrid applies them with the same loader, EML, before each start, whether or not you have switched EML on for your own mods on the Mods page.

  • Do not also run a mod that changes the same numbers, such as a stack-size or chest-slot mod. Both would edit the same values. Pick one.
  • If one of your own mods fails, your server starts without your mods, and these three settings are still applied.

See Mods on Your Enshrouded Server.

After a game update

A new Enshrouded build can move the game data around. On a build GameGrid has not measured by hand, it checks each setting's data against what it expects before writing anything. A setting whose data has moved is not applied, the server starts with the game's own value for it, and the Console says so: "Server setting โ€ฆ not applied: โ€ฆ The game's own value is in use." The other settings still apply.

Your server never fails to start because of these settings. See Enshrouded Game Updates on GameGrid.

These three are not offered in the Event Manager: they apply at a full start, not as a timed event.
