Sending Enshrouded Chat to Discord - visual guide

Sending Enshrouded Chat to Discord

Put your Enshrouded server's in-game chat into a Discord channel, understand why it only goes one way, and know when a line is named.

Setting it up

1. Set up the GameGrid Discord bot in your Discord server, if you have not: Discord Bot Setup.

2. Run /chat-link with the channel you want. On a server you have several of, pick it with the server-id option.

3. The bot replies: "Game to Discord only on this game for now: in-game chat will appear here, but messages sent in this channel are not sent into the game."

From then on your server's in-game chat appears in that channel. /chat-unlink stops it.

The same lines show in the panel's Console as [Chat] name: text, where the Chat filter shows only them.

See Discord Chat Bridge for the parts that are the same on every game.

Or a webhook, without the bot

If you would rather not invite the bot, there is a second route: a webhook chat bridge, set through the Customer API. The platform posts chat straight to a Discord webhook on its own.

Use one or the other, not both. /chat-link works by polling, the webhook works by pushing, and if you point them at the same channel every message appears twice. If you already have /chat-link running, leave the webhook alone.

See The Customer API on Enshrouded.

It goes one way, and here is why

Chat travels from the game to Discord. Nothing goes back.

Enshrouded's dedicated server gives no way for a server to post into the game's chat. There is no broadcast, no server message and no console to type one into. GameGrid's server module can read the chat inside the server process โ€” which is how you get it at all, since Enshrouded writes no chat to its log file โ€” but it cannot write a line back.

So a message typed in your Discord channel is not sent into the game. Nobody playing sees it.

This is the game's limitation, not a setting, and it shapes a few other things:

You might expectWhat actually happens
Reply to a player from DiscordNot possible. Tell them in Discord and wait for them to read it
"Server restarting in 5 minutes" in gameGoes to your Discord alert channel instead
A welcome message on joinNot possible
Announce an event in gameAnnounce it in Discord, or run it when the server is empty

When a line is named

Chat is read by GameGrid's server module, which tells players apart: every line arrives with the name of the player who typed it, however many people are online.

A server still running an older module build can name a line only while one player is on. With more people on, its lines arrive without a sender: in Discord they show as from _a player_, and in the Console as [Chat] a player: text.

Text chat has to be on

Enshrouded ships with text chat switched off. GameGrid creates new servers with it on, because the chat bridge and in-game linking both need it.

If chat is not arriving, check Text chat (enableTextChat) in Settings โ†’ Basic and switch it on. Without it there is no chat to read, and the bridge has nothing to send. Like every Enshrouded setting it applies at the next start; saving on a running server restarts it for you.

A server keeps whatever value it already has: GameGrid never switches it under you.

One bridge per Discord server

A Discord server has one chat bridge at a time. Running /chat-link again moves it to the new channel or game server.

What this is good for

  • Keeping an eye on a server you are not playing on. You see what is happening without logging in.
  • Catching problems early. A frustrated player usually says so in chat first.
  • A record. The Console keeps the lines, which is useful when somebody reports a dispute.

Privacy, worth a word to your players

Your players' chat is going into a Discord channel. Tell them, especially if the channel is public. It is their conversation, and most people assume in-game chat stays in game.

If the channel is for you rather than for everyone, make it private.

Link codes in chat

A player linking by code types !link CODE in the game's chat, so that line is chat like any other. Codes expire after 10 minutes. Enshrouded links only by that typed code, so there is no route that keeps codes out of a bridged channel; if that matters, link people by hand.

Not available

  • Discord into the game, as above.
  • Voice chat. Enshrouded has its own voice chat, and GameGrid neither reads nor relays it.
