Enshrouded Save File Location
Where your Enshrouded world is saved on your GameGrid server and on a PC, what each save file is, how often the server saves, and how to reach the files safely.
Where the world is on your server
On GameGrid your Enshrouded world is in the `savegame` folder of your server. Reach it from Files in your server's sidebar, or over FTP or SFTP with the details on the File Access (FTP/SFTP) card of your server's Overview.
GameGrid sets that folder for you (it is saveDirectory in the settings file, shown read-only in Settings โ System), so it is always in the same place.
Only the world is there. Characters are not saved on the server: each player's level, skills, inventory and map exploration are kept by their own game, on their own PC.
What a world looks like on disk
What the files are called depends on the game build the server runs.
On the current game build the world is one file, with a set of older copies of it in a backup folder:
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
world0.ksd | The world |
backup/world0.ksd.backup-0 to -9 | Older copies of the world, kept by the game and updated less often than the world file |
migrated/ | Where the game moved the files of the older form (below) when the build changed format |
On an older game build, or a world that was never moved to the current form, the dedicated server uses one world with the id `3ad85aea`, at the top of savegame:
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
3ad85aea | The base copy of the world |
3ad85aea-1, 3ad85aea-2, โฆ | Rolling copies: the newer saves |
3ad85aea-index | A small text file naming the newest copy |
The files are in Keen's own compressed format and cannot be edited by hand. A new world's files are a few kilobytes; a well-built one grows, and Keen quote up to about 100 MB.
The server's settings, including your user groups, are not in savegame: they are in enshrouded_server.json, beside it.
How often it saves
On the current game build Enshrouded saves the world about every 30 seconds while it runs, with or without players online, and once more when it is stopped cleanly from the panel. The copies in the backup folder are updated less often than the world file, so they hold a longer history: they can be anything from minutes to days old.
An older game build saved every 5 minutes. It wrote to the newest numbered copy until that copy was about ten minutes old, then started a new numbered copy and moved the index to it.
Leave the rotation to the game: do not rename, edit or delete the copies on a running server.
If the server is killed rather than stopped, anything since the last save is lost, and Enshrouded cannot be asked to save on demand. That is why Stop and Restart in the panel always stop it cleanly first.
Where worlds are on a PC
If you play Enshrouded on your own PC, single-player and co-op worlds you hosted from your game are kept in your Saved Games folder (%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Enshrouded), or, with Steam Cloud on, in Steam's userdata\<your Steam account number>\1203620\remote folder.
To put one of those worlds on your server, see Moving an Enshrouded World to Your Server.
Working with the save files
- Stop the server first. Enshrouded reads the world when it starts and writes it when it stops, so it would overwrite a change made while it runs.
- Download the whole `savegame` folder for a copy of your own: the world file, the
backupandmigratedfolders if they are there, and on an older build every numbered copy and the index together. - Upload in binary mode over FTP or SFTP. Files takes uploads of up to 1.4 MB a file.
- Take a backup first with Backups โ Create Backup Now. A GameGrid backup holds the whole
savegamefolder and your settings, stored away from the server's machine, and restores in one step.
GameGrid backups
On top of the game's rolling copies, GameGrid backs your server up every day, before every game update and before a restore, and whenever you press Create Backup Now. See Enshrouded Saves, Backups and Restore.
