DayZ Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about running a DayZ server on GameGrid: consoles, maps, player slots, mods, admin, wipes, restarts, performance and what the control panel does for you.

Server and Players

Can Xbox or PlayStation players join? No. GameGrid DayZ servers are Steam PC servers. Console community servers are only offered by Bohemia's console partner, and PC players on the Microsoft Store / Xbox app version of DayZ play on the console server pool too. Every player needs DayZ on Steam.

Do I need to own DayZ to run the server? No. GameGrid installs the server for you. Every player who joins needs their own copy of DayZ.

How many players can join? Vanilla is 60 (maxPlayers). More is possible, but DayZ's simulation runs mostly on one CPU core, so above about 60 players server performance drops on most hardware.

Which address do I give players? The address on the Connect card of the Overview tab (host IP and game port), for Direct Connect. Steam Favourites and the DZSA Launcher's server check need the Steam query port instead, which is your game port + 4. See How to Connect.

Why can't players find my server in the list? New servers take a few minutes to appear, and the browser's filters hide a lot. See DayZ Server Not Showing.

Maps

Which maps are in the server files? Chernarus, Livonia and Sakhal. Chernarus and Livonia are free with DayZ (Livonia has been free for every owner since update 1.25). Only Sakhal needs a DLC, Frostline, on each player's account.

How is the map chosen? By the mission template setting on the Settings tab (template in serverDZ.cfg). Each map keeps its own save folder. See Changing Your DayZ Map.

Can I run Deer Isle, Namalsk or another community map? Community maps are Steam Workshop mods, installed from the Mods tab, and each also needs its own mission folder. See Changing Your DayZ Map.

Mods

Can I run mods? Yes. Install Steam Workshop mods from your server's Mods tab. Mods are loaded when the server starts. See Mods on Your DayZ Server.

Do players need the mods to join? For Client & server mods, yes: DZSA Launcher subscribes players to your server's mods automatically, or they subscribe on the Steam Workshop. Server only mods need nothing from players.

In what order do mods load? In the order of the list on the Mods tab, top first. Keep frameworks such as @CF at the top.

How do I remove a mod? Stop the server first, then remove the mod on the Mods tab.

How do I get teleport and item spawning? The base game has neither. GameGrid's own DayZ Tools page can teleport, heal or message a player who is in game and spawn an object next to them, from our server-side mod, with nothing for players to install. To put an item in a player's own hands, use the shop or a kit on the Economy page. For in-game admin menus your admins open while playing, add an admin tool mod such as Community Online Tools or VPP Admin Tools as a Workshop mod. See Admin Tool Mods.

Administration

How do I run admin commands? From the Console tab, which sends BattlEye RCon commands to your server. You do not need to be in game. See BattlEye RCon and the Console Tab.

Can I log in as admin in game? DayZ has an admin password setting, and #login in in-game chat is DayZ's own feature rather than a GameGrid one — nothing in the panel uses it or needs it. Everything GameGrid gives an admin is in the browser: the Console tab takes no password at all, and the DayZ Tools page acts on a player who is in game. See How to Become Admin.

How do I ban someone? With BattlEye's ban command (online players) or addBan with their BattlEye GUID (offline players) in the Console tab. See Banning Players.

Can I make the server whitelist-only? Yes. Add players to the Whitelist under Player Management on the Settings tab, then turn on Activate Whitelist and restart. See Whitelist and Priority Queue.

Can I use DaRT or another external RCon tool? No. On GameGrid, RCon only listens inside the host, for security, so tools that connect over the internet cannot reach it. Use the Console tab.

Loot, Saves and Wipes

How do I get more loot? Raise nominal and min for the items you want in types.xml, selectively rather than for everything. See DayZ Loot Economy Explained.

Where is my save? In mpmissions/<mission>/storage_1/, inside the mission folder of the map, not in profiles/.

How do I wipe? Take a backup, stop the server, and delete all or part of storage_1 in the Files tab. See Wiping Your DayZ Server.

Why did a base disappear? Usually decay: base items expire unless a raised territory flag keeps them refreshed. See globals.xml: Base Decay.

Are backups automatic? Yes, daily, and you can take manual ones any time. A backup includes mpmissions/, where the save lives. DayZ has no command that forces a save while it runs, so a backup of a running server holds DayZ's last automatic write, which can be a few minutes behind what players see. Stop the server first when you need a backup you are certain of. See DayZ Backups and Restores.

Restarts, Updates and Performance

How often should a DayZ server restart? Most busy servers restart every 3 to 6 hours. Automatic Daily Restart only restarts an empty server. See Scheduled Restarts.

Players cannot join after a DayZ patch. The server must be on the same build. Game updates are applied from the Game Updates card on the Admin tab. See Version Mismatch and Updates.

The server is laggy. What helps most? Lowering ZombieMaxCount, avoiding inflated loot, keeping bases and vehicles under control, and regular restarts. See DayZ Server Performance.

The Control Panel

Which GameGrid tools does a DayZ server have? The tabs shown for your server are the ones it has. The Control Panel guide describes each tab.

What do the DayZ Tools, Live Map and Economy pages do? They are driven by GameGrid's own server-side mod, which we load for you, so your players install nothing for them. DayZ Tools has the mod status, a killfeed and leaderboard, the in-game chat with a broadcast box, and per-player actions: message, heal, teleport, kick, and spawning an object beside a player. Live Map draws player and vehicle positions on a map grid, over DayZ's own map imagery at about a metre per pixel, with terrain relief you can switch on and right-click tools for copying a grid reference, measuring a distance, teleporting a player to a point or spawning an item there. Economy is the in-game shop, player wallets and the Kit Manager, and it can pay players by the hour and for kills. The player actions act on someone who is in game. A shop purchase goes into the player's inventory while they are on the server, and anything that does not fit is dropped at their feet; a purchase made while they are offline, dead or unconscious is retried for a day, while a kit item that cannot be handed over at that moment is refunded instead. The Economy page itself states this for your server.

What else is on the DayZ Tools page? Areas, Zone Loot, Supply Drops, the Rotator and Battle Royale rounds, alongside the Live Map and the killfeed — and the Event Manager beside it runs events and scheduled commands. How your DayZ server fits together is the one page that explains what each of them is, the order to set them up in, and which changes land now against which wait for a restart.

Can I schedule messages and commands? The Command Manager on the Event Manager page schedules console commands. On DayZ those are BattlEye RCon commands such as say -1. Use Run Now and read the Log to see what the server replied. See the Command Manager Guide.

Is DDoS protection included? Yes. Network-level DDoS mitigation is included on every GameGrid server, always on, with nothing to configure.

What does a DayZ server cost? One flat monthly price per server, not per player slot. The current price is on the DayZ order page.
