Enshrouded Server FAQ

Short answers to the questions Enshrouded server owners ask most: players and characters, admin, commands, mods, wipes, the map and the economy.

Players and characters

How many players can join?

16. That is Enshrouded's own limit and no plan raises it.

Do my players keep their characters?

Yes. In Enshrouded a character — level, skills, inventory — is saved on the player's own PC. Your server holds the world. A player joins any server with the character they already have.

So what does a world wipe delete?

Everything built, chest contents, terraforming and world quest progress. Not your players' characters. See Starting a Fresh Enshrouded World.

Can I transfer a character to my server?

There is nothing to transfer. They bring it with them.

Can I move my single-player world to the server?

Yes. See Transfer an Enshrouded World to Your Server.

How much memory does an Enshrouded server use?

About 4 GB before anyone joins, and up to about another 100 MB per player: the world is the cost, the players are the margin. See Enshrouded Server RAM, Performance and Player Limit.

Finding and joining

My friend cannot see the server. Why?

Almost always the server browser's dedicated-server filter, which hides dedicated servers until it is switched on in their game. Check that first. See How to Join Your Enshrouded Server.

What port do I give someone adding a Steam favourite?

The one in your panel. Your server uses a single UDP port for game traffic and Steam queries. Older guides describe two ports; that is out of date. See Enshrouded Server Ports and Addresses.

Do I need to forward ports?

No. Nothing to configure.

Admin and commands

How do I become admin?

Join using the Admin group's password. That is the whole system — there is no admin list. See How to Become Admin.

What are the admin commands?

There are none. Enshrouded has no console, no chat commands and no RCON, on the client or the server. Kick and ban are in the in-game Social tab; everything else is in the control panel.

Why is there no command box on the Console page?

Because the server accepts no input. A box would do nothing. See The Enshrouded Console and Server Log.

Can I kick or ban from Discord?

No — both are in-game actions in the Social tab.

Can I warn players in game before a restart?

No. Enshrouded gives a server no way to put a message on a player's screen. Warnings go to your Discord alert channel, and scheduled events can wait until the server is empty. See Restarts and Player Warnings.

Settings

Why do my settings sometimes seem to do nothing on other hosts?

Enshrouded only reads its individual gameplay values on the Custom preset, and ignores them silently otherwise. GameGrid servers always run on Custom, so yours are always live. See Enshrouded Difficulty Presets and Start From.

Can I start from one of the game's difficulty presets?

Yes. The Start from a preset card loads a preset's values, and you can then change anything. The values are measured again on every new game build.

Do settings changes need a restart?

Yes. The game reads them only at startup. Saving restarts a running server for you.

Can I make stacks bigger, or chests hold more?

Yes, with the Inventory & Storage settings, and your players install nothing for them: GameGrid changes your server's own copy of the game data before each start. See Bigger Stacks, Backpacks and Chests.

Should I edit the settings file by hand?

No. GameGrid overwrites parts of it before each start, and a malformed file stops the server with no log at all (the reason is only in logs/stdout.log). See Files and FTP on Your Enshrouded Server.

Can I change the settings for just a weekend?

Yes, with the Event Manager: the settings change at the start and are put back at the end. See The Enshrouded Event Manager.

The map

Is the live map the in-game map?

No. It is GameGrid's own rendering of the game's terrain data, so it looks different from the map players see in game.

Does it show players?

Yes: a dot with a facing arrow and the character's name, a list of who is online, and the bases they have built. See The Enshrouded World Map.

Can I teleport someone, or give them an item?

Yes, both from the map. Teleport puts them on the ground, not onto bases or into caves. See Teleporting a Player from the Enshrouded Map.

Can I share the map?

Yes, with a link. You choose what it shows, and player dots carry no names. Links can expire and you can revoke them.

The economy

Can my players buy items?

Yes. Items go straight into their inventory. See Enshrouded Economy Overview.

Why does a large order take a moment?

Enshrouded's item-create routine makes one item or one full stack at a time, so an amount is handed over as full stacks plus singles. Nothing is refused for being large, and orders queue fairly. See How Items Are Delivered.

What happens if a player logs off mid-delivery?

It pauses and resumes when they return, for up to 7 days.

Can players sell items back?

No. That needs taking items out of an inventory, which is not available.

How do players earn currency?

From the daily login (/daily), Discord activity, and the awards you give. Enshrouded's server reports no kills, levels or playtime to pay from. See Enshrouded Economy Overview.

How do players link their account?

/link in Discord, then type the code they are sent as !link CODE in the in-game chat. See Linking Discord Accounts to Enshrouded Players.

Mods

Can I run mods?

Yes, through EML, the community mod loader, which GameGrid runs for you. It patches the game's data, so mods that change data work and mods that need code do not. See Mods on Your Enshrouded Server.

Do my players need the mods too?

It depends on the mod. One that changes something the server owns, such as recipes or chest sizes, generally needs installing only on the server; one that changes what a player sees needs to be on their PC. Read the mod's page.

What if a mod breaks after a game update?

The server starts rather than failing. If you have several mods, only the one that failed is left out and the others apply; if it is your only mod, or the failure names none, the server starts without your mods. The Console and logs/mod-framework.log say which one. See Enshrouded Game Updates on GameGrid.

Backups and updates

Are backups automatic?

Yes, daily, and one is taken before every game update and every restore. How long they are kept is in How Backups Work.

Does the server save by itself?

Yes, about every 30 seconds, and again when it is stopped properly.

Do I install game updates?

No. They are applied for you, with a backup taken first. You can switch that off and update when you choose, in Game Updates on the Admin page.

Enshrouded 1.0

When is Enshrouded 1.0, and does my server get it?

Keen Games has announced 1.0 for 15 October 2026. It is a new build of the dedicated server, so it reaches your server like every update: backed up first, then applied for you, or when you press Update now if automatic updates are off. See Enshrouded 1.0 on Your Server.

Will everything work on 1.0 straight away?

Enshrouded itself runs on the new build as soon as it is applied. GameGrid's own tools keep working on it too: the server module is checked against every new build automatically and paused on that build only if it fails repeatedly (orders then wait in the queue), the map shows the newest one until the new build's is published, and the presets are measured again by themselves.

Will 1.0 wipe my world?

GameGrid's update does not change your save, and a backup is taken before it. What the 1.0 game does with an existing world is up to Keen. Your players' characters are on their own PCs either way.

Privacy

Can I see my players' IP addresses?

No. GameGrid never shows players' IP addresses to server owners, on any game: they are hidden in the Console, the player lists and everything else.
